Between heaven and earth

Every self-respecting mountain adorns its head with a summit cross. But why actually? How did people come up with the idea of dragging heavy wooden or iron beams to the highest, often most inaccessible places and exposing them to the wind and weather as crosses? Historians are not in agreement. Some believe they are reminiscent of ancient places of judgement, others see a tradition of the crusaders that was continued by mountaineers to mark the conquered peaks with this symbol.
